SVIMEZ Report 2024: Souther Italy's revolution between renewables, innovation and sustainable growth, with 3SUN among the protagonists
Presented in the last few days, the document underlines once again the crucial role played by 3SUN along the entire photovoltaic chain and in Southern Italy’s economy.
A litmus test to better understand the photovoltaic industry and Southern Italy - The "SVIMEZ Report 2024', compiled by the Associazione per lo sviluppo dell'industria nel Mezzogiorno (Association for the Development of Industry in Southern Italy), is an in-depth analysis of the economy and society of southern regions. An overview of the economic and social dynamics that have characterised this area in recent years, on which to start planning interventions towards a future of sustainable growth.
Souther Italy protagonist of growth
In recent years, south Italy has experienced a GDP boost greater than central-northern Italy. And this was possible, among other things, through an upsurge in employment data, and the important expansion of emerging sectors such as clean technologies and renewable energies. As underlined by the SVIMEZ 2024 report, the same applies to green tech, a sector where 3SUN is at the forefront of change.
A major investment plan
As the RepowerEU plan points out, factors such as energy efficiency and an accelerated development of renewables are the pillars on which the entire European system should start off, in order to become competitive. To reduce the gap with non-European competitors, we need to bring cutting-edge, superior-performance technologies to the market.
Photovoltaics is among the main sources driving change
In a fairly complex context, it is through long-term planning and thoughtful investment that southern regions will become poles of development in key transition technologies.
3SUN - A virtuous example of change
Cited as a virtuous example and a major agent of change, also through the support of significant public investment, the Catania Gigafactory is proof of how allocating resources to renewables can generate shared value, new jobs and a positive spin-off on local economy. Through our commitment and R&D investments, technical know-how, and innovative lab developed technologies - such as bifacial heterojunction solar modules and cells - with the Gigafactory, we stand as a pioneer renewables project.
This, combined with the reduction of CO2 emissions and our contribution towards a more sustainable economy, makes the Gigafactory a European benchmark for solar panel production. According to Svimez’ estimates, the overall economic impact of 3SUN’s investment in Catania should generate, on average, over a decade, thousands of new full-time jobs and hundreds of millions in added value on an annual basis.
Over the next few years, this path will significantly contribute to strengthening southern Italy’s competitiveness, proving how shrewd industrial policies and targeted investments can boost the European manufacturing capacity, a structural transformation in the weakest areas, and a revitalisation of the competitiveness of the industrial fabric.
